Well, the family's going to be travelling around, we're going to Italy and Spain and probably up to Britain, and we're taking a Mediterranean cruise over Christmas. C: Travelling alone would be interesting, but also kind of terrifying--I think I'll try meeting some people around here before I go off backpacking with strangers. There is also the consideration of transportation. Yes, I have money, but it really adds up, and I want to be able to do things like go to movies or out to dinner with people around Toulouse as well. All in all, definitely not off the map yet, but needs some serious considering before I try to make it a reality.

Going from a life of structure and familiarity to a new and foreign place with no connections other than family must be a little jarring. I can understand how you must be yearning to "get on with your life" and how you feel it is "on hold".
What are you planning to do for the next 9 months? Please, please, please don't just hang out close to home. Travel! Travel! Travel!
Europe is small, the hostels are great and the "off season" is a great time to be poking around. Find some other travelers and tag along. You could start by staying in a hostel in Toulouse to meet some people. If you want to go to London, I'm sure that Elizabeth and I could hook you up with some of our friends and get you a free place to say.

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to everything... I just kind of wish it could happen now, instead of being on hold for nine more months, you know? I feel like I've been ready to start my own life for a long time now and it's kind of frustrating how it seems out of reach...

I'm definitely all for some minimalism! You, my dear, have a lot of stuff :P I think going through it all, enjoying or hating the emotions that come along with going through all your stuff will be a really good thing - and then you let it all go. From my experience at least, I got this utterly raw feeling that felt so good. I still do stuff from time to time to get that feeling back.

The independence thing is great too, although I think you've already got so much to show for turning 18 soon. You've got a great head on your shoulders, you're responsible, well-rounded, insanely intelligent, etc. You were brought up well and that SHOWS. Really, really well.

Babble, babble, babble. :D I applaud your trying to find things to do in the city, because I can imagine how big a shift it is to go from social life to... non-ish social life, in a way.

(Oh, and from what I've experienced of independence so far, it's SO AMAZING. Mind you, it's probably only that way because I'm not footing the bill. But it's a great first step all the same, and my plan isn't to have any bills after college anyway. More about that later.)
